Pathways to the 2023 IHP thematic program Random Processes in the Brain is a preparatory process for the conference "Random Processes in the Brain: From Experimental Data to Math and Back", to be held at the Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, from February 27 to April 7, 2023. The goal of the preparatory process is to frame and pave research practices among the participants of the IHP thematic program that will eventually emerge during the actual conference in Paris.

The compass point to the preparatory process is the program proposal that was approved for the IHP program. This document –available here– states: "The scientific project focuses on two complementary aspects, one microscopic –the study of evolving systems of spiking neurons– and another macroscopic –the study of structural learning in the brain–, connected by the notion of brain plasticity. These topics are on the frontline of current research. The present proposal is part of a long term effort to provide an appropriate scientific framework combining Biology and Mathematics to address the challenging questions raised by neurobiological data and phenomena."

The thematic program and its pathways are an initiative of the group of researchers that has founded the RIDC NeuroMat project (https://neuromat.numec.prp.usp.br/). It has quickly gained the support of a wide circle of distinguished researchers, including members of the European Human Brain Project, of the NeuroMod Institut of the Université Côte d’Azur and of the American BRAIN Initiative.
